Incident Response 101: What to Do After a Security Breach
Contain before you investigate
The immediate priority is containment: isolating affected systems to stop further damage without destroying the evidence needed to understand what happened. Rushed cleanup often erases the very logs required for a thorough investigation.
Investigate methodically
A structured investigation establishes how the attacker gained access, what they accessed or exfiltrated, and whether they still retain any foothold, before any system is considered fully remediated.
Remediate and strengthen
Once the incident is fully understood, credentials are rotated, vulnerabilities are patched, and monitoring is strengthened to detect similar activity earlier in any future attempt.
