Digital Tracking and OSINT Investigations: A Practical Overview
What OSINT-based tracking actually involves
Open-source intelligence investigations gather and correlate publicly available and lawfully accessible information — social profiles, domain records, breach exposure data, and metadata — to build an accurate picture of an online presence or a digital asset's history.
This is fundamentally different from surveillance: every source used is either public or accessed with the explicit authorization of the party who controls it.
Common, legitimate use cases
Businesses use digital tracking investigations to verify a counterparty's legitimacy before a transaction, trace the origin of a fraudulent listing or impersonation account, or reconstruct how a leaked asset spread online.
Boundaries that always apply
A tracking investigation only proceeds against subjects and data the client is authorized to investigate. Requests involving unauthorized surveillance, stalking, or access to private accounts without consent are declined outright.
